While there aren’t really specific rules that must be followed at comic cons, unless the comic con itself has their own, there are certain ways you should or shouldn’t act while attending one. For the most part, they are common courtesies towards guests and other attendees you should follow. So, here’s some guidelines regarding how to behave at a comic convention.
Ask to take pictures of cosplay
If you see someone wearing a cosplay, that doesn’t automatically mean they’re wearing it for everyone to take pictures of them in it. You should ask the individual if you can get a photo of them. If they say no, then you should respect their decision and move on.
Some people just like to dress up at conventions for themselves. It doesn’t mean they want strangers photographing them. If someone’s already posing for others taking pictures, then it’s alright not to ask though and just take your picture then with the others.
Don’t stand in the way
Comic conventions get crowded, especially in areas like the dealers’ room and artists alley. Try to make sure you’re not getting in people’s way by stopping where everyone needs to walk. That includes standing and sitting.
If you need to stop for something, then go off to the side somewhere. There will be some open areas closer to the walls of the room where you can take a break or take any pictures if needed.
Keep conversations with celebrity guests short
I know it can be exciting to meet the guests at comic conventions, and it’s okay to have some short conversations with them. Some of the people there doing autographs and pictures like to talk with their fans briefly. But remember that there are a ton of other people in line, and they have to wait there just like you did.
If you don’t want to wait in a line for a really long time, chances are the other attendees there don’t want to wait hours in a line to get an autograph or picture either. So, try your best not to take up too much time while you’re getting to meet that actor or voice actor you like.
Keep panel questions clear and concise
If you’re attending a panel and want to ask the guests a question, you’re totally free to do that when the appropriate time comes. But remember not to take up too much time asking them, just like when talking to them while getting an autograph.
And make sure the guests can understand what you’re asking. I know if you’re a big fan of someone, it can be hard to keep calm and talk, but they won’t be able to answer your question properly if they really don’t understand what you’re trying to ask them.
Treat others how you would want to be treated
I know this sounds like such a cliché rule, but it really is true for anything. And it’s the same when it comes to attending a convention. Don’t be mean to people. Don’t do inappropriate things to or around others. Respect any volunteers or security there.
There are tons of different people attending and they are all free to like different fandoms even if they like ones you don’t. Conventions are no place to berate someone if they like certain movies or TV shows that you don’t. Everyone there just wants to have fun and enjoy their hobbies.
Conclusion
Basically, how to behave at a comic convention just comes down to being a decent person and respecting others. Everyone is there because they want to have fun and enjoy the convention. They are a fan of something just like you, and both you and everyone else will enjoy it more if you keep in mind how you’re acting.
Be nice and courteous, and chances are you’re acting just fine while attending a comic con. And don’t forget to take a look at any specific convention information regarding any rules or guidelines on how to act because there could be a few more set by the con itself.
