Star Rating:

Rating: 8 out of 10.

Star Wars: Visions is a mixture of single episode stories in the Star Wars Universe. Each story has a different art style, though the majority of them are various forms of anime. They aren’t connected to each other and each feature different characters. I’ll be reviewing both released seasons in this review.

As soon as I saw the ads for Star Wars: Visions when the show first came out, I knew I wanted to watch it. As a fan of anime, the idea of anime and Star Wars put together really interested me. However, it just took me forever to finally see it since it was on Disney+ and I didn’t have that streaming service for a while.

Now that I have seen it, I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. I recommend it to both Star Wars fans and anime fans, fans of both, or even just one or the other. The stories are all separate from canon, so you really don’t need to know anything about Star Wars to watch them.

Yes, they don’t follow the lore of Star Wars. But in this case, they did that on purpose. They wanted the studios to have free reign to be creative and make what they wanted. And I think that worked well for this because we get some really good stories.

Like I already mentioned, each episode is a separate story. Basically, you can consider them one-shots. But that doesn’t stop the stories from being well written. In fact, I think it shows how great the writers were. Each story is well thought out, characters are detailed just enough for a single story, and most of them wrap up really well within that time frame.  Of course, some of them are a bit more interesting than others, but all of them are still good.

There are a few though that actually leave you wanting more. The initial storyline is finished, but the concept is so interesting that I wanted to have more episodes that follow those specific characters. Particularly episodes 4 and 5 in the first season and 5 and 6 in the second season for me.

There’s some real depth and emotion put into the stories, which is incredible given the limited time of one episode. Many of them aren’t even a full 30 minutes. Though, again, for some that leaves you wanting a longer more in-depth story for certain characters.

The art is different for each episode, though most of them are anime. I like some of the art styles more than others. However, it’s clear the artists put a lot of time and care into the art and animation. I absolutely love seeing anime style light saber fights. and I definitely want so much more Star Wars like that.

I love some of the artistic choices made. For example, the first episode is in black and white except for the color of the light sabers. It made the episodes more unique. Character designs are really appealing too, particularly certain ones.

I’m going to be honest, I think Disney Star Wars has made some not-so-great choices in their story telling. I think the sequels struggle from poor writing. I don’t like Rey (they could have written her better) and they really underutilized Finn. But every once in a while, they make some good choices and Star Wars: Visions is one of them.

Star Wars: Visions is really enjoyable to watch. It’s well written, especially for being one-shot stories that have to be finished within less than 30 minutes. And the art and animation for all of them were great. I’m especially pleased to see so many stories as anime. I want to see more Star Wars anime and I’m happy that another season will be coming out this month. You know I’ll be watching it, so check back for my review of season three soon.

I really do think fans of Star Wars will like watching this, even if you’re been a bit jaded by more recent efforts from Disney. These are really good stories and a lot of love and time were put into them. They deserve more attention.
