In a dystopian future, people use OASIS, a virtual reality, to escape the real world. Following the death of its creator, a gaming challenge is issued in which whoever discovers the golden egg hidden within the game wins ownership of OASIS. The challenge requires someone to gather three keys after completing three different challenges to unlock the gate that protects the golden egg. The CEO of Innovative Online Industries wants to take control of OASIS so that he can integrate annoying online advertising into virtual reality. Other players seek the egg as well, including orphaned teen Wade Watts, known as Parzival, who is the first participant to win the first key and wants to prevent the CEO of IOI from ruining OASIS.
