Invincible season 2 picks up where the first season left off. Mark and his mother must deal with the consequences of Omni-Man’s actions and his departure. Meanwhile, Mark is still trying his best to get stronger. He knows he needs to take his father’s place as the strongest superhero on Earth, and there are many enemies who want to cause him and the people he cares about harm.
If you haven’t read my review of the first season, I suggest you do because many of the things I said there still hold true for the second season. The story is still very interesting and compelling, and many of the characters are still very well-written and likable.
I will say that it’s a bit harder to like Amber after the season reveals that she knows certain things and yet still acts the way she does. But some of how she feels is still reasonable and understandable.
Each character is complex. They have their own stories that are mixed into the show, but everything feels well-paced and well-placed. There’s a good balance of focus between Mark as the main character and the side characters.
I think this season is actually funnier than the first one. Particularly the episode when Mark and Amber go to a comic convention, though some of that episode won’t be as funny if you don’t understand some things about conventions. But it’s a new character that really makes this season funnier.
A new Martian shows up, perfectly voiced by Ben Schwartz, and every scene that character is in is just hilarious. I genuinely would laugh out loud from the jokes the writers made through this character and his actions.
Though while I say this season is funnier than the first, there are still a lot of intense and serious emotions coming from it. Mark and his mother struggle mentally because of Omni-Man’s actions, Eve has her own problems, and the ever-growing threat from the Viltrumites and the attacks of others keep you on edge and glued to the show. Especially when you have no idea who will survive or die in this series.
This show does a really good job at deciding who should stay dead and who shouldn’t, especially compared to instances from Marvel and DC comics when it seems like almost no one ever stays dead unless they are Ben Parker. It means that everything that happens in the show still has weight and keeps you invested.
Invincible season 2 was just as enjoyable as the first season. It’s well-written, and it’s clear there’s special care for the complexities of each character. This series kept me hooked from the first episode to the last one, and I’m excited to keep watching more. I highly recommend this series.
