Star Rating:
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is part 1 of the final arc of the Demon Slayer anime. It takes place directly where the last series arc left off. Tanjiro and all the demon slayers must face off against Muzan and the demons inside the Infinity Castle, including all the remaining upper-rank demons.
I really enjoyed this movie. I’m going to admit at the start of this review that I have nothing negative to say about it. I thought it was a really good movie, and I’m glad I saw it in theaters.
As usual from Demon Slayer, the visuals are amazing. The artwork and animation are incredible. The artists added so many intricate details, even in the background. Every building had so many fine details, like windows and lights.
I loved the way all the lighting and shadows were drawn. The art and animation in Demon Slayer are impressively crisp and vibrant. I like the vibrant colors of the attacks and characters. Demon Slayer can be a pretty dark and gory anime, but I love how it doesn’t match the trend to make its artwork dark and gritty.
The movie jumps right into the story, so there’s no recap of what previously happened. If you haven’t watched the anime in a while, you might feel a tad confused because of that. But I’d just seen the most recent series arcs, so I had no problem jumping right into it. In fact, I preferred it because it meant I wouldn’t have to watch what I had just seen again.
However, others who might not have recently seen it might have felt like they needed some sort of reminder about what’s happening and who everyone is.
Still, I personally thought the story was well done. There was enough detail throughout the movie to fully grasp what was going on, and I liked how we finally got more information about different characters. Some of their stories did come up pretty fast. I’m surprised they weren’t hinted at more in the series, so that could be a tiny bit jarring to some people. But the movie itself does a good job at explaining so you don’t stay feeling that way.
I really liked the pacing of the movie. It is long, but it didn’t feel that way to me. My only complaint about its length was that I had to use the restroom at one point, but I didn’t want to miss anything. I kept thinking it would end soon, but it just kept going. To be frank though, I didn’t want the story to end. I wanted to know more and see more. The only reason I wanted it to end was that I needed to use the restroom, and I was in a movie theater rather than my house. I could have paused it if I were home.
While some people might not like the placement of the flashbacks, I thought they were fine. They fit well because they related to the fight or person who was doing the fighting. We needed that information in the flashback to understand the fight more. There was never a point while I was watching the movie that I thought any of the flashbacks felt out of place.
And they weren’t annoying like some anime flashbacks can be that repeat the same thing over and over again. These were all new pieces of information and scenes that gave us more explanation and information about characters.
I don’t really like to give any spoilers when I review movies, so I try my best to keep them as vague as possible. However, I will say that I really enjoyed what we saw from some of the characters in this movie. For example, Zenitsu usually got on my nerves, but he was actually really cool in this. And both Akaza’s and Shinobu’s stories were so heartbreaking and emotional.
There are two more parts to this arc, so don’t expect to feel satisfied with the story, though. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle cuts off with a lot of the story still in progress. There are still fights going on, and there’s still plenty more to see.
The fights were incredible, though. They’re action-packed, drawn with tons of detail, and just plain cool to watch. I think they’re some of the best fight scenes we’ve seen in anime. Plus, the music choices were perfect. Some of the instrumental music with the heavy guitar just added to the cool atmosphere during the fights.
I can see a few people having complaints regarding the flashbacks during the fights or being confused if they haven’t seen Demon Slayer in a while. Personally, I have nothing negative about this movie. I enjoyed watching it. I think it was really well done, and I can’t wait to see part 2.
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is one of the best anime movies I’ve seen, and frankly, I think one of the best movies in the last few years in general. I highly recommend seeing it, but it might be helpful to give yourself a recap before you do if it’s been a while since you’ve seen the last arc of Demon Slayer.
