Star Rating:
The Book of Boba Fett is a Star Wars series about bounty hunter Boba Fett, who has decided to become the new crime lord of Jabba the Hutt’s territory on Tatooine. With the help of Fennec Shand, whom Boba Fett saved after the events in The Mandalorian, Boba Fett must fight to keep his claim to Jabba the Hutt’s throne.
I don’t think this Star Wars series is as bad as the internet was leading me to believe. However, I do agree that the people working on it made some mistakes that affected the quality of the show. There were definitely issues, but I still overall enjoyed watching it.
The Book of Boba Fett continues that western-esque feel that I like in The Mandalorian, and I do still like it here. I’m not the biggest fan of westerns usually, but there’s something about the western vibes I get from these two shows that I’ve really enjoyed lately.
It was nice to see Temuera Morrison again. I think he did a great job with the script he was given. Unfortunately, the script was the problem. Boba Fett felt different from episode to episode. So, I wonder if American television shows would benefit from having the same writers or directors for the entire series rather than switching up who does each episode.
There were instances where he was his usual self. He was strong and cool. He was Boba Fett, Star Wars’ greatest bounty hunter. And that’s when the show was good and interesting. That’s what made me want to watch more of it. But there were other times when he just didn’t seem as capable as he should be. I know he’s supposed to be older in this, and that could justify some of it, but he has all this experience that seemed to disappear in some episodes.
Particularly, it seemed like he wasn’t as capable or smart, and Fennec would tell him what to do. While I can understand he doesn’t have experience being a crime boss, neither does she. So, it felt odd that she was the one always giving advice. I actually do like Fennec, and I think she was written well. However, there were times when it seemed they wanted her to be more capable than Boba Fett.
There’s a particular instance that I feel really shows this. In one episode, Boba Fett goes to open a door someone went through, and the person locked it, so Boba Fett can’t get in. He just stands there like he doesn’t know what to do about it. Fennec comes over and shoots the lock to open it. All I could think about at the time was, why wouldn’t Boba Fett think of that? Why didn’t the writers just have him shoot it? Why did it require Fennec to do it?
It wasn’t necessarily that Fennec herself acted like she was better than Boba Fett or believed she was better than him. In fact, she was grateful to him for saving her life. She decided to stay with him because she felt like she owed her life to him. It was more like the writers themselves wanted her to be better than him. But again, there were other times when Boba Fett was still the badass he always was. It seemed like it just depended on who was working on the episode at the time.
The worst part of The Book of Boba Fett was the biker gang. They looked atrocious and silly. I don’t understand why the people in town were so afraid of them like they were a serious problem. They just looked like a bunch of teenagers wanting to rebel from their parents.
I don’t know who on this show thought they looked good, but their costumes and bikes were terrible. They were completely out of place in the Star Wars world. They fit more in a Doctor Who episode than a Star Wars series.
I also thought it was weird how much Din Djarin showed up later in the series. There was a point where I forgot I was watching The Book of Boba Fett and thought I was watching an episode of The Mandalorian. Don’t get me wrong, I really like Din Djarin and The Mandalorian, but it was just weird when the show is supposed to be about Boba Fett.
I did, however, really enjoy seeing some of the characters we’ve only ever seen in cartoons as live action. And I do really like how Star Wars casts the actors and actresses who voice the characters to still play the characters in live action (or still voice them in certain instances).
Despite some of the obvious issues this series has, I still enjoyed watching it. Boba Fett is a great, interesting character who does deserve his own series. I did want to keep watching to see what would happen next. I also think the sets and costumes (besides the biker gang, of course) looked great. I just wish Temuera Morrison was given something better to work with. I wish they let Boba Fett be Boba Fett.
I know The Book of Boba Fett didn’t do too well in the ratings, so we probably won’t see another season. But I would love to see Temuera Morrison get a second chance at playing the awesome Boba Fett again, just with a better script. The series had a good concept, and they could still build on it. They just need to execute it better and let Boba Fett shine like he deserves.
